Optimising waste management can significantly increase profits and reduce costs, even with problematic materials and mixed waste.

The optimization of waste management was done for a production plant with a very clean operation, in which the connecting parts of furniture (e.g. screws, wooden dowels) are packed in plastic bags.
Due to the nature of the plant's production activities, mainly high-value commodities are generated as waste within the plant.

Opportunities to increase profits from selling wooden pallets, LDPE packaging film, metals, and cardboard boxes. Potential in environmental savings in case of paper wipes used in manufacturing plants.
1. During the scan, we focused on market research and finding new business partners for sought-after commodities at the highest possible price (i.e. cardboard, plastic packaging, wooden pallets).
2. We also identified  new business partners for problematic materials, such as mixed metals (a mixture of screws in plastic sleeves, small metal components, wooden dowels, and metal components wrapped in plastic packaging), LDPE film occasionally containing metal parts, and mixed packaging containing cardboard corners and sololite.
3. Also, we focused on waste prevention. We calculated the amount of environmental savings for the client by replacing disposable paper towels with reusable textile wipes.


Thanks to Cyrkl, the client saved as much as 23% of their annual costs by identifying purchasers for wood, plastic, and mixed packaging materials instead of incineration. 
The project also lead to a 300% increase in annual sales profit for wooden pallets. 

Optimizing the value of waste from furniture production

What happens to the products we use every day after they serve their purpose? Cyrkl experts worked on gathering and evaluating of data from end customers and processors that will serve as a base for education and building an infrastructure for their reuse and/or recycling.

The first step, when searching for solutions is to identity the problem. This, however, becomes a challenge when the processes in question seems to be a mystery to all. Cyrkl experts were tasked with shedding light on what actually happens to products from a specific sector after they served their purpose. How do end customers dispose of them? Where are the products being collected? How is a product which has become waste managed (i.e. recycled, landfilled, incinerated)? And is there a way to make this process more sustainable for all? These were just few of the questions Cyrkl specialists tried to find answers for by gathering and evaluating data in Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary.

Gathering valuable and up to date information is a necessary step in the fast paced world of circular economy. ​​Financial savings hidden in packaging materials, synthetic oils, e-waste and other waste streams of a world leader in compressor manufacturing

As large companies are constantly being pushed to conduct their business in a more environmentally friendly manner, Cyrkl's waste experts aimed to create a plan to optimise material flows, focusing on the reduction of landfilling as well as identifying potential financial savings and profits in waste management. 


Although our company has already embarked on the path of Zero waste sent to landfill, we focused on new possibilities of how we could improve waste management since it is such an important pillar for the environmental sustainability of our operations. We were looking for someone "from the outside" who could impartially assess the level of our waste management, whether we can find new potential partners, or whether it is possible to evaluate our waste better or sell it more advantageously.
We managed to fulfill all these expectations as part of the Circular Waste Scan. Cooperation with Cyrkl was very good from the beginning. From the agreement of the contract, through a personal inspection of our plant and detailed communication, to the delivery of the resulting analysis. It showed that our waste management is at a very good level, but at the same time there is potential for further improvement.
Cyrkl also connected us to new waste management companies, which not only saved us hundreds of tons of CO2, but also more than 35,000 euros. And we greatly appreciate that our cooperation did not end with the delivery of the analysis, but continues - through the Marketplace or Auctions.

Packaging materials are one of manufacturing companies' most frequently occurring waste streams. For this client, the primary waste streams for review were packaging foils and wood packaging coming into the company from suppliers. As these are highly demanded materials, our experts used Cyrkl's database to research new possible partnerships for the company to select the most suitable one.

The project's main outcome was a thorough market analysis of potential business partners in selected waste streams. Considering the needs and preferences of NIDEC Embraco, Cyrkl's waste experts proposed new potential partnerships, which led to significant savings in packaging waste, synthetic oils and e-waste. 

An improvement in the area od packaging waste led to a **400% increase in profitability.** Specifically:

**Foil packaging** - polyethylene (PE) film of different density and colour.

Significant savings were also uncovered waste synthetic oils. Following a market analysis, Cyrkl’s waste experts identified a new business partner that can save NIDEC Embraco up to **100% of its annual disposal costs** for this waste stream. NIDEC Embraco finds this opportunity very attractive and is already working on measures to 
to comply with the required parameters.

Furthermore, by analysing NIDEC Embraco’s electrical waste from production and end-of-life equipment, Cyrkl’s experts identified a leading e-waste processor; this collaboration can save **more than 60% of costs.** In addition, an invaluable benefit is achieving recycling of this waste.

Yet, these savings were only the icing on the cake of a grand plan to implement new changes to make the waste management of this company more sustainable.

How to ensure social involvement in the transition into the circular economy? By closing the loop for coffee consumption in Poland!

Coffee production has grown by 200% since 1950 and is currently the most important traded commodity in the world after oil. Apart from having a high carbon footprint, the coffee industry is a source of multiple waste streams, such as processing residues, single-use plastics, and spent coffee grounds (SCG). The public awareness of the negative impact of their consumption choices is increasing with increased media coverage on such topics so there is a visible momentum for change.

Recyclability analysis

Along with the rising awareness, multiple circular funds are opening due to the rising importance of the topic, making it easier to implement circular solutions. Thus, it is the perfect time to work on the transition towards a circular economy by closing the loop for products and commodities. Such opportunities led to a project by Przemysław Piechocki - CEO of the Association for Social Cooperatives - which focused on closing the loop for coffee.

That is why Cyrkl, in cooperation with the Association for Social Cooperatives (Stowarzyszenie na Rzecz Spółdzielni Socjalnych), has developed the Bean to Bin and Beyond concept. The main goal of the project is to show that closing the loop for key commodities is possible and, more importantly, it can be done in an inclusive manner- by activating people with disabilities, who are currently excluded from the job market. Moreover, Cyrkl has managed to create a consortium of experts perfect for this project.

Closing the loop for the consumption of coffee

How a procurement strategy for used EPS insulation boards reduced purchasing costs in the long term and simultaneously increased the recyclate content

In this green sourcing project, we worked with a company that produces a range of materials for the construction industry and wants to expand its use of secondary raw materials. The challenge was to support the client in establishing suitable sourcing options for polystyrene waste. EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) is particularly popular as an insulation material, but most of these boards are not correctly sorted or collected after use and therefore end up in waste incineration.

The recyclability of EPS is beyond question - thanks to technical advances, insulation boards can be easily cleaned and recycled. Hardly any material is lost during further processing of this secondary raw material. Developing a robust sourcing strategy can help to ensure that even small quantities can be sent for recycling after collection. The first step in securing long term procurement for the client is developing a robust network.


Cyrkl’s green sourcing strategy resulted in increasing the annual share of recycled input material by approx 700 tonnes per month. This was achieved through targeted research of waste producers of this material as well as cooperation with with specific partners. This meant our client can reduce procurement costs of this input material as well as increase the recycled content in production.


EPS insulation boards: From incineration to recycling material 

Cyrkl helped SIKO, one of the largest bathroom and kitchen equipment sellers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, to analyze their waste streams and make the company's main warehouse circular. After two years of implementing recommended minimizing waste strategies, Cyrkl prepared a second circular waste scan with waste stream analysis and the achieved results.

The aim of this project for SIKO was to assess the current level of waste management in the company's main warehouse. The main waste streams dealt with were paper and plastic packaging, waste ceramics and waste wood. In particular, we focused on the correct way of sorting, material recycling and reusing. We were also looking for new partners with the optimal price and the best possible way of final waste management (as high as possible in the waste management hierarchy).


SIKO's cooperation with Cyrkl has opened up new ways for us to make our waste management more efficient. It has brought alternative options for their reuse, both through the waste marketplace and through new customers. This has also led to significant economic savings.  As the largest retailer of complete bathroom and kitchen equipment, we deal mainly with ceramic waste, wood and plastics in our waste streams.  Thanks to the successful implementation of the recommendations from Cyrkl, we have, for example, managed to significantly reduce the amount of cardboard waste - we give used boxes a second chance, they remain in circulation and we have found a use for them in our e-shop, for packaging shipments.  And we are now able to use ceramic waste for landscaping purposes in construction or landscape reclamation. And many other interesting and useful tips. Working with Cyrkl helps us on our sustainability journey.

The main SIKO warehouse produces waste/materials from unpacking imported goods such as cardboard boxes, box liners, LDPE films and materials from broken goods (ceramic and glass fragments or even slightly damaged products). Most of these materials were handed over directly to waste management companies without further treatment. As a result, the materials lost some of their value and in some cases were unnecessarily landfilled. We recognized that setting up a treatment process within the company could save those materials and give them a second life. 

Before 2020, most of the cardboard waste generated in the company's central warehouse was handed over to waste companies for recycling. This cardboard waste can not only be recycled but also reused directly in SIKO's warehouse during its own logistics.


For cardboard waste, we particularly recommended using it for the company's own logistics - 1) packaging of products sent to customers - repeated use of undamaged cardboard boxes from delivered products for sending goods to customers and 2) use of damaged boxes after treatment (cardboard cut/cardboard scrap) to protect shipped products. If cardboard waste is already generated, we recommend pre-treatment of paper waste by pressing to enable sale at optimal prices. Instead of using press containers, Cyrkl recommended using presses on-site, likewise in the case of plastic waste.

When evaluating the waste scan after 2 years (end of 2022), it is necessary to appreciate the commitment of the company at this point. The amount of cardboard waste has been reduced by almost 1/3 and most of the still usable boxes are used in the company's logistics. The company has also introduced a collection of cardboard boxes from customers so that these can also be reused. It also introduced commission sales of second-category goods at symbolic prices to prevent waste (ceramics, bathtubs, sanitary ware).

In the case of plastic waste, we recommend more detailed sorting. Currently, the company's mixed plastics mainly consist of LDPE films, which can be advantageously sold after compression. There is still a hidden financial potential for SIKO here.

For slightly damaged products (bathtubs and other ceramics), Cyrkl identified opportunities to donate them to charities. We suggested that artists can use damaged ceramic products, such as tiles and wall tiles for their projects. Unfortunately, for the rest of the waste ceramics, landfilling was the only way of managing this waste (in 2020). Here we recommended at least options for price and logistics optimisation - better sorting and offering material as technical security for the landfill (much better price conditions for storing of this material).

The SIKO company followed these recommendations and sorted waste ceramics better. During the evaluation of the waste scan after two years, new possibilities for the material use of waste ceramics for landscaping during construction activities in the vicinity were found. Cyrkl unequivocally recommends the material use of these wastes instead of dumping them in a landfill.

Bathroom and kitchen equipment warehouse waste scan revealed potential savings

A large soft drinks producer needed a complex analysis of 10 plants who included a wide range of activities, from soft drink production to salad production. 

The main waste streams addressed in the project were plastic, glass and paper packaging, process water and bio-waste from salad preparation.

The biggest opportunities within the project were the optimization of prices for the sale of highly recyclable materials such as plastic or paper packaging as well as the potentials in waste streams that were unnecessarily treated with negative value in the waste regime such as process water. There was also interesting potential in the processing for bio-waste from salad production for livestock feeding purposes.

Among the most interesting results were the financial savings  through better partners or the sale of reusable boxes and the sales of paper and plastic packaging.
Other interesting savings have been found through the transfer of rinse water to agricultural biogas plants as a by-product. In this case, however, process and fermentation tests still need to be completed
In the case of bio-waste from salad production, opportunities for composting or transfer for livestock feeding purposes were found. Both generated very interesting financial savings.

Waste challenges and solutions for one of the largest soft drink producers

A large distillery producing ethanol as a 1st generation biofuel wanted to start production of 2nd generation biofuel.

The company's intention, in accordance with European legislation, was to start production of 2nd generation biofuel, i.e. fuel that is produced from bio-waste or by-products of organic origin. The aim of the project was to investigate the potential of by-products and wastes that would be suitable for distillery technology and to verify the current methods of handling and conditions of transfer for final processing, including contacts to relevant persons.

Most of the organic by-products and bio-waste are nowadays already used in some way, either for energy or materials. In many cases, therefore, obtaining input materials for the distillery has been a matter of price negotiation. However, we have also encountered materials that, despite all legislative measures, still end up in a landfill. For example, these were bran, flour residues or various dusts from food production. The interesting opportunities arising from this project were therefore both opportunities for material producers to get better prices and to divert valuable materials from landfill.

The result of the project was an assessment of the individual perspective sectors that produce the required waste. The most interesting sectors were farmers (agricultural wastes), wastes from flour mills (especially corn mills), and bakeries (old pastry). The company used the results of the project for the appropriate oversizing of the 2nd generation biofuel production technology, as a basis for the business plan and at the same time obtained a sufficient amount of waste and by-products for production.

From food waste to resource: supporting biofuel generation

Cyrkl has worked with an international drugstore chain operating in many European countries. In this project, Cyrkl dealt with the optimization of waste management in their central warehouse for the Czech Republic.

The main challenge was to optimise the management of cardboard and plastic waste from unpacking and distribution.

The unpacking of goods generates a relatively large amount of waste based on cardboard and LDPE. In the case of cardboard, this is mainly cardboard boxes and various types of liners. There are basically three options: 
1. reuse directly within the company 
2. sale for reuse to second-hand packaging dealers
3. sale for closed loop or regular recycling. 

The first two options generate very interesting savings as the value of the carton, box or liner as a product is preserved. In the case of the third option, it is also possible to increase the profit on sales in the case of pre-processing by pressing. The same is the case for LDPE waste films.


As part of the optimization of waste management in the central warehouse, we recommended a better system of sorting cardboard boxes and using them within their own shop, selling surplus usable boxes to traders with used packaging. 
In the case of unusable cartons, we recommended the introduction of baling by balers and the sale of cartons directly to paper mills. 
All of these measures would result in significant financial and CO2 savings. 
Another important area was introducing measures for the pressing and sale of LDPE films, where an interesting increase in profit could also be achieved.

Solving the challenges of the retail sector

Cyrkl has analyzed recyclability of different types of packaging for a Czech supermarket chain, which operates approximately 330 outlets in the Czech republic.

Majority of the goods being delivered to the supermarket are transported in extra packaging. After the goods are unloaded and unpacked or even used, this packaging material often ends up in a landfil. This is caused by inefficient sorting on the sorting lines as well as the material itself, which is often not suitable for recycling. The aim of this project was to pinpointing possible solutions on how to incrase low recyclability rate of the packaging in the most efficient way.

As previously stated, there are multiple aspects that needed to be addressed. Therefore, Cyrkl experts on waste management and circular economy looked at improving the design of packaging material itself, as well as bottlenecks within existing processes. Both offered room for improvement.

Specifically, following steps and projects were recommended:
- Redesign of soft PP packaging to PE packaging
- Pilot Project PET trays
- Finding all means of recycling mixed rigid plastics
- Planning a single day excursion to the aforementioned plants for key employees

We remain in contact with the supermarket chain and discuss the implementation of the selected options, which should lead to an increase in the recycling rate.


Helping a Czech supermarket chain to avoid landfilling 

What are the bottlenecks of recycling of post-consumer EPS? Here’s how Cyrkl has contributed to mapping possibilities of recovering EPS from post-consumer packaging

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a valuable material that is, in fact, recyclable if handled properly. However,its low recycling rate is due to the challenges connected to collecting low quantities and removing residue materials and odours from used EPS. Tracking specific waste streams- their generation and waste management pathways is needed in order to implement solutions for increasing the recovery of EPS.

Due to Cyrkl's network and market expertise, it was possible to approach the challenge by mapping the flow of the post-consumer polystyrene waste stream and analysing the factors that make it difficult or impossible to recycle.

As a result, Cyrkl has managed to identify the post-consumer waste stream of EPs along with the most essential challenges to EPS recycling in Czechia.

Mapping the potential of post-consumer EPS waste to improve recycling rates

Large manufacturer of tobacco products wanted to optimize their waste management

In the factory the main challenges were high amounts of paper waste, high amounts of crushed cigarettes, unused cigarette filters, wooden and plastic packaging. The goal of the project was to find as many opportunities as possible for the reuse and recycling of the different waste materials produced.

The biggest opportunities were in the waste paper streams because of very high quantities produced and not enough pretreatment of the waste. The other waste streams were also produced in very high amounts.


The main outcome of the project was a recommendation on the pretreatment of the paper waste stream. Thanks to this measure it was possible to significantly increase the value of the produced paper waste. 
The second very interesting outcome was a solution for the unused cigarette filters. During the circular waste scan we found opportunities for the production of industrial sorbents and blown thermal insulation. The latter option was technically tested with very good results and is going to be implemented.

Paper and cigarette filters into new products- solutions for the tobacco industry

The client has set ambitious environmental goals and has made progress in reducing waste and CO2-eq emissions. They have enlisted the help of Cyrkl to conduct a comprehensive analysis of all waste produced in order to identify better solutions for reducing emissions and finding financial savings.

Key waste streams include - high quality plasters, construction glues, paints and other construction materials.

Plaster manufacturing was a key waste stream identified, particularly the dust and used filters. These materials have high potential for onward use. 
Packaging materials (plastic and wood) also had scope for optimisation.

Cyrkl identified different possibilities for the use of the dust from plaster manufacturing - reclamation of an old mining site, solidification of other wastes and, a particularly interesting option, the start of a cooperation with academia on a research project using this material as filler for cement/asphalt!
Cyrkl also identified new potential partners for recycling LDPE sheets, the re-use of big bags and wooden pallets.

Lower amount of waste coming to landfill thanks to circular scan

We carried out the circular waste scan for a company that is a leader in compressor technology and manufacturing.As part of their production, they mainly produce tremendous amounts of metal waste and various types of hazardous waste.

The challenge was to find better solutions for metal sludge and aqueous liquid waste contaminated by dangerous substances, We were also looking for new business partners to buy wooden pallets, cardboard and packaging films. We also focused on waste prevention and calculated the financial and environmental savings if reusable absorbents were used instead of disposable ones.

We also looked for solutions for waste that, although produced in small quantities, is problematic for the client in terms of its disposal (o.e. corrosion-resistant paper and paper kegs).

1. We found recyclers interested in cooperation within the wood and cardboard. Thus, there was the possibility to significantly increase profits.
2. By advertising on the marketplace, we found a buyer for paper kegs (packaging made from materials supplied to the factory).
3. We have obtained a quotation for a suitable evaporation plant (on-site treatment technology for liquid waste) from several companies.
4. Significant savings in annual rental costs after changing supplier of reusable industrial wipes

Waste challenges of the manufacturing sector - metal sludge and aqueous liquid waste

Automotive component producer uses Cyrkl’s automated online waste analysis tool to scan their existing waste report and discovers significant cost and emissions savings. 

The challenge of the project was to find better solutions for PVB sheets used as one of windscreen layers and also benchmark prices paid for waste management by a producer in the automotive sector. PVB sheets are a challenge for recycling. Up to now, they were landfilled in high yearly amounts. PVB Sheets, used as a layer within windscreen manufacture, are a recycling challenge, previously sent to landfill in high volumes and with little transparency within the market for pricing.

The company uploaded their waste report showing 300t of annual production of PVB foils for which they haven't managed to find a recycling partner yet. 
Cyrkl’s automated online waste analysis tool also identified opportunities in the company’s paper waste which was not being pre-treated, their hazardous waste and their wood waste. 
In all these areas lack of knowledge regarding market prices increased costs and decreased options. 


Cyrkl was able to identify a recycling partner through their network of more than 17,000 EU wide companies using their marketplace. 
Now, instead of landfill transport costs, the PVB sheets are an income stream. They are sold for processing into PVB regranulate for use as an ingredient in glue manufacturing. 
Adding pretreatment of paper waste also increased its resale value and lowered logistics costs. 
Market visibility also allowed for a better price for hazardous waste management.


Automated Waste Analysis uncovered the potential to reuse 300t of PVB foils instead of sending to landfill

Researching sources of used raised floor panels: In the right place at the right time

Cyrkl completed 2 green sourcing projects to procure used raised floor panels for a German manufacturer of interior finishing products.  These panels are usually installed as system flooring in offices and public buildings to be able to run the building services underneath. When a building is demolished, dismantled or renovated, these panels often end up in a mixed construction waste container and therefore in the construction waste landfill.

Our client operates a process where used raised floor panels can be reused thanks to a reconditioning process. For the economic efficiency of this procedure, it is absolutely necessary to have sufficient used panels available as input material and to identify sources of the panels already before deconstruction begins. The correct procedure for deconstruction as well as the correct storage of the panels is critical to ensure the quality of this secondary raw material and to enable recycling.


Cyrkl had cooperation discussions with potential suppliers of used raised flooring panels and provided a list of suitable partners to the client. However, several factors make the availability of the material difficult: 
1. Low awareness of the recyclability of building materials on the part of the deconstruction, demolition and remediation companies. 
2. Availability of this material is on a project by project basis: Only when a building is  renovated or demolished are there also panels.
3. Last but not least, it's advisable to start the conversation with the partners even before the dismantling.

As a result, we agreed on an ongoing collaboration with the client.


Giving system flooring a 2nd life

Cyrkl experts helped a manufacturer of electric motors find opportunities to significantly increase profits from metal waste materials. 

The highest volume waste stream consists of ferrous and non-ferrous metals which were being sold to a scrap metal trader. Cyrkl recommended working directly with a foundry and identified 20 specific opportunities to contact. This option could **increase sales profits from metal waste by 211,000€ per year**.  Direct buyers could also be found on Cyrkl digital marketplace.

Cyrkl experts also reviewed local legislation and discovered that sales directly to the foundry could be **categorised as by-products not waste**. 
This meant the annual volume of waste produced by the manufacturer could be cut to 699 tons from a previous total of 15,400 tons. This also meant the metals could be returned as production materials for manufacturing, further closing the loop in their manufacturing.  

Another potential was discovered in ferrous grinding sludges. These contain high volumes of metals which makes them eligible for recycling with positive sales value instead of continuing to pay for their waste disposal costs and would save 18,5 tons of CO2-eq from being released to the atmosphere. Some of the waste cables with endings made of silver could also be collected separately and sold for a higher price to traders with precious metals. Additional revenue could also be generated by implementing a process for the pressing of metal turnings. 


In some cases, there were inaccuracies in the monitoring of waste metal volumes, Cyrkl recommended to start using a smart system of monitoring the metal waste production and offered suggestions for potential partners for its implementation. Precise monitoring would not only lead to **increase in revenues from resell of metals**, but would also help to optimise the effectiveness of material use in production.

Getting the most value out of metal waste 

Ceramic production is material and energy intensive and generates large volumes of waste. Closing the loop reduces waste management costs and reduces emissions.

The production of ceramics is a material and energy-intensive process that creates a lot of waste. Besides industrial packaging, there are also high quantities of production residues and single-use casting molds.

Many material streams can be used in production in other industries , often as substitutes for primary materials. Furthermore, internal loops can be established when sourcing the right materials.

Closed loops were identified that can be established internally and in cooperation with external partners. The waste management costs can be potentially be reduced by around 20% and the CO2 emission by around 5%.

Closing the loop in the ceramic production process

From waste to resource: how Cyrkl enabled a leading tobacco products producer to turn a waste stream for incineration into an innovative product used in building materials.

On average, 10 million cigarettes are sold every minute. The average lifetime of a cigarette is around 6 minutes. More than 50% of them are not disposed of properly, resulting in increased littering and environmental pollution. The production process of cigarettes also generates large amounts of waste connected to the production of the cigarette itself and also its packaging.

Cigarette filter production provides a steady, clean waste stream of cellulose acetate. Cyrkl’s approach was to treat this waste stream as a valuable resource and use our knowledge and experience to make it happen. As we previously tested in other markets, this material can serve as a substitute for raw materials used in the building sector.

As a result, we have connected one of Poland's biggest producers of cigarettes, with a company producing essential materials for the building sector. If the pilot project is successful, significant amounts of GHG emissions will be saved and as much as 100 000 €  of financial savings will be generated.

Cigarette filters: from waste to valuable material

Even municipal waste can be a valuable resource! Cyrkl experts helped a hotel in Prague to significant savings potential by analysing their waste streams and finding new opportunities for unused materials. 

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in the hospitality industry as more customers prioritize venues with eco-friendly practices. One of the major challenges, that this sector faces is the production and inefficient sorting of waste materials. 

Cyrkl experts were tasked with helping out in this area for one of the hotels belonging to a major chain in Prague. A proper analysis and setting up effective processes was part of their eco program with a goal of reducing emissions and carbon footprint by 20% by the year 2030.

A physical waste analysis for one of their hotels was performed, in cooperation with an external source. Based on the aforementioned analysis, it was found that up to 78% of mixed waste was being unused, which posed a great opportunity for recycling and upcycling. 

The most interesting result of the circular waste scan was the suggestion of streamlining the methodology of waste management data collection, along with carrying out a physical analysis of mixed municipal waste, which is the largest waste stream of the group and the one with the highest potential for CO2-eq savings by landfill diversion. 

Cyrkl experts also suggested to explore the potential of landfilled waste, introduce efficient separate collection of fats and oils, as well as to explore the potential for direct sales of specific components of paper, plastic, glass and bio-waste. 

Items such as compost or furniture legs were published on the platform which lead to new business partnerships that contributed to their eco goals. Not to mention, that the wooden parts could be used again for the creation of new and unique pieces of furniture.

Creative reuse and municipal waste as an opportunity in the hospitality sector

A large Czech metalworking tools manufacturer wanted to investigate the possibility of recycling corundum-based blasting material.

After the successful implementation of the initial waste scan, we followed up with another project - the aim of which was to confirm the legislative possibility of handing over the blasting material as a by-product to a manufacturing company that does not have a waste management licence.

Manufacturing companies produce large quantities of interesting materials that are still managed as waste. However, waste can only be handled in facilities that are approved for this by the government. It often happens that even though there is a technological solution for recycling, it is not possible to actually transfer the material because the company does not have the relevant authorization. This is where the by-product institution under Article 5 of the Waste Framework Directive comes in. Many materials that are landfilled today, as in this case, can then be recycled.

First we informally verified with the regional authority whether it would be possible to process the used blasting material as a by-product. We verified all conditions according to Article 5 of the Waste Framework Directive and §8 of the Czech Waste Act No. 541/2020 Coll. Subsequently, we prepared the application for a decision, including all arguments, and photo documentation, and prepared it for sending to the regional authority. The assessment by the regional authority is currently underway.

Can blasting material be classified as a by-product and get a second life?

Cyrkl waste scan identifies significant potential profits from the sale of paper and metal waste streams. Savings in waste rubber, waste solvents and mixed municipal waste were also identified.

The primary waste stream in this project was waste rubber, especially unvulcanized synthetic rubber which is currently being sent to landfill as no other option had been identified. 
Metal, municipal waste, paper, plastic, wood waste streams also needed to be optimised and the handling of blasting material.

The circular scan has moved our waste management towards greater use of the waste generated. It has shown us the opportunities that currently exist in the waste market. I would recommend it to other companies as it offers concrete examples of avoiding waste. Subsequently, we found buyers for some materials through the marketplace. CO2 saving was also important for us, as we are a Japanese company that puts environmental protection at the top of our values. And the reduction of our carbon footprint in waste is proof of our environmental responsibility.

Cyrkl utilised it’s knowledge of the EU wide market to identify a partner in Poland who can utilise the waste rubber. This meant the waste was not sent to landfill and was transformed into an income stream.

Cyrkl used their Automated Waste Analysis to perform the initial scan and identify the key areas for improvement. 
Cyrkl then analysed the market to identify potential partnerships for the priority waste stream - rubber. And identified optimisations in other waste streams - metals, plastics, paper and solvents.
Using the Automated Waste Scan allowed Cyrkl to complete the process in just over 1 week, creating a swift action plan for the client.

How to enable car servicing garages to be more circular in their operations? Our team helped a leading car service chain to optimize waste management.

Car services play an essential role in the process of used tire recycling as they are very often generating waste- simply during the seasonal tire changing process from both individual and business (fleet) clients.

Car services have a great opportunity to impact the end-of-life of used tires (and other waste streams) by ensuring their proper use by material recycling or pyrolisis.
It is, however, not only waste from used tires that is being generated in-car services- the list also includes used oils, oil filters, packaging waste, foils, accumulators, metals, and many more. By implementing sustainable practices, car services have the unique opportunity to ensure proper waste management of all of those waste streams.


As a result, we have created a handbook for the entire chain of car services with concrete solutions for the most common waste streams. By optimizing waste recycling prices, valorizing waste streams such as packaging, and implementing reusable cloths and wipes systems, car services can not only reduce their environmental impact but also waste management costs.

How market research and checking the legislative framework uncovered better prices and prevented waste

The client is one of the largest drugstore companies, operating in the Czech Republic and 7 other European countries. In the circular waste scan we dealt with waste generated in a central warehouse near Prague. The challenges in the conducted consultancy were mainly various packaging materials - especially cardboard and LDPE film, damaged goods and mixed municipal waste.

In particular, packaging materials were not sold at current market prices at the facility we analysed. We therefore proposed carrying out market research for our client to compare their prices with current market prices. Damaged goods were sent to energy recovery, although there is already the possibility to donate them to people in need. The obstacle was a financial one – according to our client’s knowledge they are obliged to pay taxes for donating goods.

The most interesting result of the circular waste scan was the setting of real market prices especially for LDPE films. Several new partners were found for LDPE films. Another interesting result was the evaluation of the potential for reuse of boxes and the baling and sale of waste cardboard. Furthermore, we analysed the legislation on the donation of damaged goods, and the conclusions were further consulted with the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic and the association of food banks. We found a solution to donate damaged goods without having to pay VAT.

Uncovering current market prices and practicing donation instead of incineration

Circular waste scan conducted in a company producing cables found methods to increase the value of waste metals from cables and reduce waste management costs.

Cyrkl scan investigated how to retrieve value from 800 - 900 tons of annual waste cable production which was predominantly composed ofcable cuttings and defective cables. These  can be crushed in order to separate metal and insulation parts for further use.

The copper sludge created during cable production was previously sent to landfill , but after drying, it can contain up to 70% raw copper which can be reused in manufacturing. The company can obtain up to 22 tons of copper peryear this way. Copper can also be retrieved from absorbants and filters and be further used or sold. 

Cyrkl also offered legislation advice on how to classify packaging of hazardous waste.


Cables usually contain significant amounts of metals - especially copper and aluminium which have a high value on the market. Cyrkl recommended increasing the volume of cables that are crushed in order to separate PVC or PE insulation from the metal. This metal regranulate is a sought after commodity on the market, while the insulation materials can be transformed into roof tile material. Cyrkl conducted a revision of copper granulate prices and identified a potential to sell it for 4,300 EUR, a higher price per ton than before.

Can the backing paper from labels be recycled? Cyrkl worked with the leading producer of furniture on recovering 3 most challenging waste streams

During the furniture manufacturing process, both  good marketable commodities (e.g. cardboard, LDPE film, wood) and also many other problematic wastes are generated. Within the circular waste scan for this client, we focused on more than 20 streams of waste. However, these 5 were the most challenging:
1. Mixed wood-plastic sawdust containing ABS or/and PP plastics, 
2. Plastic (ABS or PP) edges and moldings, 
3. Backing paper from labels, 
4. Hazardous wastewater,
5. Abrasive paper from production is currently landfilled.

The problematic wastes primarily analyzed in the scan were: 
1. mixed sawdust with plastic particles, 
2. backing paper from labels, 
3. hazardous wastewater contaminated by colors from the manufacturing process


1. We found recycler interested in cooperation within mixed sawdust   
2. we found technology suitable for on-site separation of sawdust from plastic particles, which could result in a better price for collection and recycling  
3. Regarding backing paper we found several possibilities: 
a) possible collecting and handing over to the manufacturer free of charge, and thus with potential savings of 100% of annual costs 
b) the possibility of replacing the current base material with recyclable PP with a thin layer of silicone.
